2nd AMS album out November 6
Adrian Maxwell Sherwood's second solo album, entitled 'Becoming a Cliche' will be in the shops on November 6, and not October 18, as announced earlier. The release has been somewhat postponed.
Like his solo debut 'Never Trust a Hippy' (dating from 2004) it will be released by Real World Records. The album actually features a host of guests: Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Dennis Bovell, Little Roy, Jazzwad, LSK, Bim Sherman, Samia Farah, Mark Stewart, Raiz
The first album Adrian made with his name on the front of the sleeve as opposed to on the back as a producer was ‘Never Trust A Hippy’ (Real World, 2003). The album was primarily instrumental, using worldly samples and some of Adrian’s favourite musicians performing with contemporary Jamaican rhythms from Jazzwad, Lenky and Sly and Robbie.
With ‘Becoming A Cliché’ Adrian has continued to work with Jazzwad doing the beats, with long-time engineer Nick Coplowe. Jazzwad, an excellent young producer/programmer, lives between Jamaica, England and Canada and has worked with some of Jamaica’s finest talent.
“During my career I’ve been very lucky,” says Adrian. “I’ve worked with nearly all my early musical heros. On this record are reggae giants Lee Perry, Little Roy and Dennis Bovell, as well as a sampled Bim Sherman vocal I recorded a number of years ago. The record also features ‘new’ artists like the multi-talented singer/songwriter Samia Farah (whose paintings and design provide the artwork for ‘Cliché’). I have big respect for her work.”
Lee ‘LSK’ Kenny (formerly called Bedlam a go go) features on two tracks - his ability to write thought-provoking lyrics in no time at all impressed Adrian. He has recently worked with Faithless and long term collaborators Nightmares On Wax.
Over a decade ago, Adrian mixed an album for Raiz’s old band, Alma Magretta, and they now work together on Adrian’s On-U Sound System live shows in Italy. Raiz contributed a vocal track on the last Massive Attack album.
The last lead vocal contributor to mention is old friend Mark Stewart whose relationship with Adrian goes back to 1980 and who Adrian cites as one of his greatest influences.
Also featured are Adrian’s two daughters Denise and Emily who appear on vocals with Lee Perry.
‘This is my second solo album. It’s personal, it’s good and I’m very proud of it,” says Adrian. He will be doing dub shows to promote the new album in November.
