Bim Sherman, the sweetest voice of reggae, died November 2000, but his music lives on. Century Records released a compilation of tracks Bim recorded for Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound label in February 2002. The album is called The Need to Live and will be on cd as well as 2lp. Skip Mcdonald and Doug Wimbish are two of the musicians on the album, guest appearances are made by Shara Nelson (Massive Attack), Sinead O'Connor, Talvin Singh and Jah Wobble. Along with that release the album Love Forever will now also be released on vinyl.
Bim Sherman recorded loads of albums, and only two of them were released by Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound label. Yet he appears on numerous On-U (related) records: Fats Comet, Keith LeBlanc, Gary Clail, Tackhead of course (ever heard his version of Mind and Movement?, Dub Syndicate, and Akabu.
The Need to Live contains rare, previously unreleased and alternative versions of On-U productions. To name a few: Be my Lighthouse is a vocal version of S.D.I. by Lee Perry and Dub Syndicate - originally only available as a 12" import from Italy (with additonal vocals by Shara 'Massive Attack' Nelson and Lizard Logan.
Devious woman and man is a collaboration with Tierra Sur from Peru and is an exclusive track. Unreleased sound system versions are: To be free, Run them away, Can't take it easy. The album title track The Need to Live was recorded in the space of about three hours on Ministry's fairlight. Bim along with Bonjo I (African Headcharge) and Skip McDonald recorded acoustic versions of Use Your Head (Tribulation) and No Longer. These previously unreleased tracks were to be the inspiration for the Miracle album.
Singer and songwriter Bim Sherman died on the 17th of November 2000 - his music will live forever.
