Doug Wimbish in 'Moondive' project

Doug Wimbish participated in a remarkable Dutch music project called 'VPRO's Moondive'. Five days of hard work with fellow musicians resulted in a live show broadcasted by national Dutch television and radio and released on cd.

Doug during the rehearsalsDoug Wimbish was one of the six musicians to participate in the first session of a new series of the Dutch radio- and televisionprogram VPRO's Moondive. The musicians were put together in a mansion in the south of Holland (see picture below) and had to create enough music (partly new material) to perform a 90 minutes concert on Friday night at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, 4th of June 1999. The live recording is now available on cd (see below).

Musical leader was Dutch composer Huib Emmer. He has a classical musical education but has changed ground to electronics and techno over the last years. The rest of the squad, apart from Doug, were: Gerard Bouwhuis (piano), Peter van Bergen (saxophone/clarinet), DJ/producer Stefan Robbers of Acid Junkies and singer Alison Goldfrapp (Tricky (Pumpkin), Orbital, 808 State).

Doug had a huge influence on the music and the gig at the Paradiso itself, with his bass playing and performance. Some of the stuff played was very experimental, but most of it was dance orientated. Three tracks were credited to Doug: Perculator, a very cool version of Grandmaster Flash's The Message on the rhythm track of Jungle Funk's Ugly Face; Quasimodo, Doug as a one man band, and Gangster, a track of Trippy Notes for Bass with the remarkable voice of Alison Goldfrapp.

moondiveThe concert of the 'musicians on a mission' was broadcasted live on Dutch radio and the internet, followed by a television impression of the creative process and the gig itself a couple of days later. VPRO now also have released a cd with the complete registration of the concert, avalaible only with the broadcasting company. Originally the cd is only for sale in The Netherlands, but your Webhead managed to arrange the possibilty for people abroad to by it.

For inhabitants of the European Union the cd )just click the sleeve) will cost 16 euro (including shipment and handling). They can send either a Eurocheque or cash. People outside the EU will have to pay 20 dollar, and they can only send cash. The address is:
VPRO Publieksservice
Postbus 11
1200 JC Hilversum
The Netherlands

When you do so, please mention the Tackhead website. I don't earn a penny, but then they know what the deal is. If you have any questions, send a message to VPRO's Bart Baas.

doug wimbish with alison goldfrappIf you don't want to buy the cd, you can still listen in on the internet! Just surf to the Moondive-site. You will then be able to listen to the concert via RealAudio. You can plug in live, or at any time you want because the file will remain at the VPRO-site for quite some time, I'm assured. You can also check the creative process by viewing the diaries (click on 'Swalmen').

You can read more detailed information on the program and the musicians on the web site mentioned above. It's in Dutch, but there are a lot of translators on the web that can help you out. Some of the musicians in the three other editions of Moondive are: Bill Rieflin (Ministry, Revolting Cocks), Renaud Pion (Björk, Bomb The Bass), Justin Adams (Brian Eno, Jah Wobble) and Guy Sigsworth (Bomb The Bass, Björk, Hooverphonics).
